Raúl Sánchez is a “Late Starter, Self Taught Poet” who began to write out of necessity and longing. Raúl is the author of three poetry collections including When We Were Water (World Enough Writers, 2026). He was the City of Redmond, WA Poet Laureate from 2019-2021 and a 2014 Jack Straw Alumni. As Raúl points out, “I have realized that my profession could have been as an educator, however I am very satisfied to have mentored middle school students since 2019 at Denny International Middle School as well as Evergreen High School through Writers In The Schools (2017-2019).” Raúl has also volunteered inside the Juvenile Detention Center through Pongo Teen-Writing. According to Raúl, “I love to read in front of my people, the common folk, the immigrant worker, the youth, reminding them what Ada Limon said: ‘Now is the moment to put away our attention-sucking gadgetry and try to describe the beauty and tragedy of being alive in this day.’” Raúl Sánchez’s poems honor Ancestry, Culture, Humanity, Color, Life!
