Follow your bliss this Spring. Take a writing workshop with Christopher Luna. Christopher has an MFA in Writing and Poetics from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, where he received training in literary community outreach from Jack Collom, and two decades of teaching experience. He served as the Poet Laureate of Clark County, WA from 2013-2017. In 2004 he founded the popular Ghost Town Poetry Open Mic, which he co-hosts with his wife Toni Partington. Christopher and Toni co-founded Printed Matter Vancouver, which publishes local poetry and provides coaching and editing services to Northwest writers.

Poets and artists have always used allusion and reference to create something new. Explore strategies for assembling borrowed words and images into art and poetry. Create visual collages that incorporate text or poems that include visual aids. Bring newspapers, magazines, photos, found text, and natural items to class. JOIN US FOR THIS WONDERFUL CELEBRATION OF LOCAL STUDENT POETS

Season Four of Poetry Moves will once again feature ten young poets from the schools visited by the poets in Clark County Poet Laureate Christopher Luna’s Poets in the Schools Program. The workshops were led by April Bullard, Christopher Luna, Jim Martin, and Morgan Hutchinson. Christopher Luna supervised the instructors, and Printed Matter Vancouver co-founder Toni Partington managed and supported the team.

On July 15, we will celebrate the students whose poems were chosen with a special reading at the Vancouver Farmers Market Music Stage in Esther Short Park. Each student’s poem will be read aloud. Those students who cannot be present will be acknowledged by one of the instructors from the Poets in Schools Program. Arts of Clark County will have channel cards from previous seasons of Poetry Moves for sale to benefit the program.

The student poems will appear on C-Tran buses through December 2017.

When Christopher Luna was named Poet Laureate for Clark County in 2013, he launched a poets in the schools program that sends local writers into Clark County schools to lead poetry workshops aimed at showing children that poetry can be meaningful, magical, and fun. The program has received grant support from Humanities Washington and the Arts of Clark County.

Arts of Clark County Chair Karen Madsen made contact with C-Tran and laid the groundwork for the Poetry Moves program. Her husband Cameron Suttles designed the channel cards for the buses. The first and third season of the program featured poems from ten Clark County poets, eight of whom were selected by Luna and his wife and Printed Matter Vancouver co-founder Toni Partington as judges of a countywide contest. Season Two featured students from the Poets in the Schools Program.

Looking for inspiration this summer? Why not spend some time with Clark County Poet Laureate Christopher Luna, a graduate of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and a creative writing workshop leader with nearly two decades in the classroom. He would love to share his passion for poetry and storytelling with you.

If you are interested in taking one of these workshops, do not wait. Such classes will be canceled within 3-5 days of their beginning if the minimum enrollment numbers are not met.

Luna also facilitates a writing workshop from 11:30-2:30 on the second Saturday of every month at Niche Wine Bar (1013 Main Street, next door to Angst Gallery and the Kiggins Theatre).

Clark County Poet Laureate Christopher Luna and Washington State Poet Laureate Tod Marshall will also have one poem each on the buses. Luna’s poem is entitled “pavement pastoral” and Marshall’s poem is entitled from “With Apologies to Andre Breton.” Christopher is the first poet laureate for Clark County; the Clark County Arts Commission recently extended his term for the third time. He will remain in the position through the end of 2019.

Poetry Moves judges Partington and Luna would like to thank everyone who submitted to the contest. We are also very grateful to Karen Madsen of Arts of Clark County, Graphic Designer Cameron Suttles, and C-Tran for their hard work and support.

There will be a reading to celebrate the winners at the Vancouver Community Library on Sunday, January 15, 2017. Previous channel cards from the first two phases of the programs will be available for sale at the event. All proceeds from these sales will go toward funding the Poetry Moves program.

 CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO RESIDENTS OF CLARK COUNTY, WA

Printed Matter Vancouver is proud to announce the submission period for POETRY MOVES, poetry by Clark County residents to be showcased on C-Tran Buses beginning January 2017.

Submission Guidelines:

What You Need To Know:

·         Deadline: Poems will be accepted until September 14, 2016 at 11:59pm, Pacific Standard Time.

·         Submissions: By email only.

·         Eligibility: Must be at least 18 years of age and a resident of Clark County, Washington.

·         What to Submit: a maximum of two (2) poems. Poems can be no longer than seven (7) lines. The poem can be a complete poem or an excerpt from a longer poem. If the poem is an excerpt, please indicate this and give the poem title. Previously published poems may be accepted subject to the discretion of the editors. Indicate the publication name, date, poem title, and publication rights in the body of the submission email. Only one poem per poet will be selected and a total of ten poems will be chosen for this phase of the project.

·         If accepted: If your poem is accepted for use in this project, the editors may have suggestions for edits or format changes to prepare the work for display. Whenever possible the editors will work with the author to review suggested changes. Authors will have the final decision on the edits. The editors are unable to guarantee publication of your work if they feel the edits are necessary and the author disapproves of the changes.

·         Author agreements: Authors agree to public use of their poem and photo. The Poetry Moves project and C-Tran retain first rights to use and display the poems. From there, rights revert back to the author. Authors agree to have their work and photo appear online or in other publicity/promotions by Poetry Moves, C-Tran, Arts of Clark County, and Printed Matter Vancouver.

Poem Format:

§  Poem(s) must be in Times New Roman, 12-point font with one-inch margins.

§  Include your name, address, phone, and email at the top left of each page.

§  Include the poem’s title one line above the body of the poem, in bolded font.

§  Poems should be single-spaced with one blank space between stanzas.

§  Poems should not exceed seven (7) lines on 1 page, and be your original work.

§  Seven (7) lines may be excerpted from a longer poem, if indicated as such.

§  Poems should be saved as a separate document in Microsoft Word with the extension: your last   name+poem title. Example: Luna+Sunset Dream

everyone. Write poetry in response to prompts and read a variety of published
poems that you can use as inspiration. Read and respond to one another’s work in
this supportive setting, paying close attention to revision.

What should you do after writing a first draft of a poem? How do you shape and
develop a poem into a publishable piece of work? How do you decide if and when
to publish your work? Discuss strategies for revising and editing your poetry,
followed by an overview of how to find outlets that might publish your words.
Explore the importance of chapbooks and whether or not entering poetry contests
is a good idea.  Please bring 3-5 typed, unfinished poems and a lunch to class.

Clark County Arts Commission Presents a Benefit for Clark County Poet Laureate Poet Laureate Christopher Luna on Friday, December 4

Concurrent with the December 4th First Friday Art Walk, the Sixth Floor Gallery, in the Public Service Center at 1300 Franklin Street, will host a special event. Mark your calendar to meet Christopher Luna, Clark County, WA’s inaugural poet laureate, who recently accepted an invitation from the Clark County Arts Commission to extend his term through the end of 2016.

Proceeds from gallery sales and art objects crafted by local artists will go to support literary arts programs across the county. Entertainment will be provided by public school arts students, courtesy of the arts commission’s Spotlight on Young Performing Artists program.

Sale of art and various other items: 3:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Reception, with musical entertainment, light refreshments, and gallery talks on poet laureate-initiated projects: 5:30 – 7:30.

Christopher Luna will give a short poetry reading at 6:20pm.

Poets and artists have always used allusion and reference to create something new. Explore strategies for assembling borrowed words and images into art and poetry. Create visual collages that incorporate text or poems that include visual aids. The first class we will discuss materials—newspapers, photos, found text, natural items—that you can bring in as well as some materials that you didn’t even know you could collage with. Scissors, glue, and collage paper will be provided.

Memoir is also a powerful way to demonstrate the interconnectedness of all human beings. Clark County’s Poet Laureate will encourage you to begin to see yourself as a part of history. Whether you are interested in publishing a book or simply leaving a legacy for your family, this course is an opportunity to explore the creative process of this genre while learning the craft of storytelling. Join Clark County Poet Laureate Christopher Luna for The Work, a monthly poetry workshop at Niche Wine & Art Bar. From noon until 3:00 on the second Saturday of every month, we will listen to spoken word recordings, read and discuss poetry, and write four or five new poems together. Niche is located at 1013 Main Street, right next door to the historic Kiggins Theatre, in downtown Vancouver’s Arts District. Cost: $20 suggested donation; no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Bring a poem to share as a way of saying hello. Shareable snacks are also welcome and very much appreciated.

Christopher Luna named Clark County’s first Poet Laureate

I am pleased to announce that the Clark County Arts Commission has named me Clark County’s first Poet Laureate. I am very grateful to the commission for this honor, and look forward to this opportunity to share my passion for poetry with even more members of our community. I have a lot of ideas about how to do this, which I will share at the public meeting mentioned in the press release below, as well as a public address which I have been asked to give at the Vancouver Community Library on Tuesday, March 12 at 7pm. I encourage everyone who values poetry and its ability to transform our lives to join us in celebrating this great step forward for the county. I am very grateful for Vancouver’s poetry community, and for the love and support of three amazing women: Toni Partington, Mel Sanders, and Leah Jackson. Without their belief in me, and their own work for the arts community, none of this would have been possible.

Vancouver resident selected first Clark County Poet Laureate

Vancouver, WA – Christopher Luna, a Vancouver poet, visual artist and editor, has been named Clark County’s first Poet Laureate by the Clark County Arts Commission.

As Poet Laureate, Luna may act as a cultural ambassador, composing poems for special events and occasions. His main duty is to promote poetry and literature, nurturing public knowledge and appreciation of the power of words. His work will reflect diverse experiences in Clark County and the Vancouver-Portland metropolitan area.

The public can meet Luna when he is officially installed as Poet Laureate during the commission’s 6:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the sixth-floor hearing room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.

Luna earned a Master of Fine Arts in Writing and Poetics at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University, Boulder, Colo. He serves as a writing consultant and poetry event coordinator for WSU Vancouver’s Writing Center, where he teaches a weekly workshop.

His work has appeared in New York Journal of Books, Poetry Project Newsletter, The Columbian, The Oregonian and Willamette Week. He co-edited Ghost Town Poetry, a collection of poems from a popular open microphone poetry reading series he established in 2004. Luna frequently is a featured reader at bookstores, night clubs, libraries and coffee shops.
